AI Job Interviews in Australia: What Theatre Nurses Should Know

Oct 14
3 min read

In a 2026 Greenhouse survey, 54% of Australian job seekers said they had been interviewed by AI in the past year.

If you work in an operating theatre, it is worth knowing what that means before an AI interview request lands in your inbox.

Recently, a job seeker wrote in The Guardian about being interviewed by an AI assistant. She called the experience "dystopian and dehumanising". She said she still had not spoken to a single human being.

This post covers what the survey found, what it cannot tell us, and what theatre nurses and the managers hiring them can do about it. It is general information, not legal or employment advice.

What the Greenhouse survey found

Greenhouse published its 2026 Candidate AI Interview Report in late April 2026. It surveyed 2,950 active job seekers across the United States, United Kingdom, Ireland, Germany and Australia. Australia made up 200 of them.

The Australian results included:

  • 54% said they had been interviewed by AI in the past 12 months. On a sample of 200, that is about 108 people (200 × 0.54).

  • 39% of Australians who had completed an AI interview said they never heard back. Only the United Kingdom was higher, at 42%.

  • 35% said AI makes it harder to stand out, the highest of any market in the survey.

The United States figure for being interviewed by AI was 63%.

What the survey cannot tell us

Before anyone quotes these numbers, three limits are worth knowing.

  • The Australian sample is small. Two hundred people cannot speak for every job seeker in the country.

  • Everyone surveyed was actively looking for work, so the results do not describe people who are not job hunting.

  • Greenhouse sells hiring software, and its report does not state when the fieldwork was done.

The survey was not specific to nursing. We cannot confirm how many theatre nurses have been through an AI interview, and we have not found a figure for it.

What an AI interview can and cannot tell you

An AI interview is built to collect answers from you. Theatre nurses usually need answers from the employer as well, including:

  • What the lists look like and how the case mix runs

  • What the roster, weekends and on-call involve

  • Who is in the team and who manages it

  • How orientation and support work for new starters

An automated interview may not be set up for those questions. That is not a reason to refuse one. It is a reason to ask for a conversation with a person before you accept an offer.

If you are asked to do an AI interview

A few practical questions are reasonable to ask before you start:

  • Will a person review my answers, and who makes the decision?

  • Is there a human interview option?

  • How long will it take to hear back?

  • Can I speak to the theatre manager before I accept?

How an employer answers tells you something about the process you would be joining. Prepare as you would for any interview, with specific examples from your own cases and your own team.

If you are hiring

This is my view, not a finding from the survey. A clear process is fairer to candidates.

  • Tell candidates upfront if AI is part of screening.

  • Offer a person as an alternative.

  • Reply to everyone who completes an interview, including the ones you do not progress.

Where this leaves us

AI interviewing is already common enough that more than half of the Australians in this survey had met it. How it is used is a choice each employer makes.

Have you been interviewed by AI for a theatre role? Tell me in the comments what it was like, and whether it could answer your questions about the team, the lists or the roster.
