Over the years, I have recruited hundreds of perioperative professionals across Australia and New Zealand. When clients ask what makes an exceptional theatre nurse, they often expect me to talk about technical skills. Those skills matter, but they are rarely what people remember most. The theatre professionals who leave the biggest impression are the ones who create confidence in the room. They notice when someone is struggling, adapt calmly when a list changes, communicate clearly under pressure and help others without making them feel embarrassed. Technical skills can be taught. Trust is earned. The best theatre teams are built on people who make everyone around them better. It is also one of the biggest reasons people leave. Candidates rarely say they are moving because they dislike surgery. More often they say they do not feel supported, the culture has changed or they do not feel valued. Careers are built on leadership, respect, psychological safety and feeling part of a team that wants you to succeed. If you are a theatre leader, remember that your team notices the little things. A thank you. Checking in after a difficult list. Celebrating a small win. Listening before reacting. If you are a theatre nurse considering your next move, ask yourself one question: Do I feel supported where I am? Sometimes the right team changes everything.
