Florence Nightingale: The Lady with the Lamp Who Lit the Way for Every Nurse

Some people change history without ever intending to. Florence Nightingale simply wanted to care for people who were suffering. What she ended up doing was transforming healthcare forever. Born in Italy in 1820 to a wealthy British family, Florence was expected to marry well and live a comfortable life. Nursing was considered unsuitable for women from privileged families. Despite strong objections from her family, Florence believed nursing was her calling. Everything changed during the Crimean War in 1854. Florence travelled to the British military hospital at Scutari with a team of nurses. Wounded soldiers were dying not only from their injuries, but from infections, poor sanitation, contaminated water and overcrowded wards. Florence recorded deaths, tracked infection rates and studied the hospital environment. She introduced improvements including hand washing, better ventilation, clean bedding, nutritious food and improved hygiene. Historians debate the exact figures because several improvements occurred over time, but there is no dispute that her work changed military healthcare and hospital management. In 1860 she established the Nightingale Training School at St Thomas’ Hospital in London, helping professionalise nursing education. She also pioneered the use of statistics in healthcare. For perioperative nurses, her influence can be seen in every infection prevention protocol, sterile technique, checklist and patient safety initiative. Good nursing saves lives through knowledge, observation and advocacy.
